Well-being in Schools Training Day

Well-being in adolescence has attracted much research attention in recent years, with a number of studies highlighting the poorer psychological well-being of UK youth compared to youth from other nations, (UNICEF, 2007).  In a sample of 193 8-12 year olds, Muris et al (1998), 70% reported being worried every now and then.  The content of most of these worries was mainly concerned with school performance, social contacts and dying and health.  In 2009, the results of the UK government’s Teen Life Check survey highlighted issues of current concern for young people living in the UK.  The most commonly reported worries included worries related to losing weight, fitting in, bullying and peer pressure.  As well as being studied as a topic in its own right, psychological well-being has also been examined as a correlate of other behaviours including; experiences of bullying in school (Hawker & Boulton, 2000); use of the internet and social networking sites (Gross et al, 2002) and worries and problems in adolescence (Weems et al 2000). In addition, the emotional health and well-being of professionals working with children and young people is attracting increased attention. If professionals are to support, teach and advise children and young people on well-being then it is of paramount importance that professionals should be supported in enhancing their well-being at work.

This one-day event will explore issues of well-being in children, young people and professionals working in in child and youth based settings.  Information presented will be drawn from schools, educational policies, relevant legislation and current research in the field. Delegates will be signposted during the day to a host of relevant resources to help equip them in enhancing well-being in child and youth based organisations. Presentations and workshops will include:

·         Well-being in children and young people

·         Problems and coping in children and young people: What do children and young people worry about and who do they talk to?

·         Supporting and enhancing in children and young people

·         Time management for professionals working in child and youth based organisations

·         Managing stress in professionals working in child and youth based organisations

Who should attend?

The day is aimed at any professional working with children and young people, including local authority representatives, school teachers, head and deputy-head teachers, pastoral care leaders, youth workers and social workers.
